Born in Chattanooga, Tenn. in 1979, R&B sensation Usher Raymond moved to Atlanta with his family when he was 12, where he began singing in a church choir. When his vocal talents became apparent, Usher was soon recruited by a talent scout for LaFace Records, who signed Usher while he was still in high school. His 1994 self-titled debut album - executive produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs - spawned a Top 10 hit, "Think Of You," and led to work singing jingles for Coca-Cola and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, as well as a popular duet with young R&B diva Monica.
In 1997 Usher returned with My Way, produced by Jermaine Dupri and executive produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface. The album was a huge success, dominating the R&B charts for weeks and eventually going multi - platinum.
In early 2001, Usher was set to release a new album, All About U when tracks were leaked via Napster, the Internet music sharing service. Arista ultimately opted to delay its release while the frustrated singer returned to the studio to record new tracks for the album. Finally, the following summer, the newly retitled Usher album - named 8701 after its release date - saw the light of day.
